The Volcanic History of Sloan Canyon

Did you know you've been hiking, running and biking over extinct volcanoes? Volcanic dikes? Plutonic rock?! The present day serenity of Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area contrasts its violent past. Sloan Canyon contains one of the best records of volcanic activity in the Las Vegas area and contains at least eight volcanoes that erupted from time to time millions of years ago. Dr. Gene Smith, emeritus professor of geology at UNLV, has will share his knowledge on the geology of our area.
