Landscape Restoration near Dutchman Pass Road

For National Public Lands Day Friends of Sloan Canyon is partnering with the Bureau of Land Management to perform landscape restoration and remove social trails along Dutchman Pass Road, near the eastern boundary of Sloan Canyon NCA.

We'll be gathering near the Dutchman Pass trailhead at a parking area just inside the NCA boundaries. From there we'll carpool down Dutchman Pass Road for 2 miles or so to the restoration site. We'll wipe out some old social trails and restore the area to a more natural looking state for a couple hours then head back to the parking area lunch and many high fives.

Protective gear, tools, and portable restrooms will be provided, as well a boxed lunch and beverage at the end of the morning.

If you can use a garden rake or shovel you can help with conservation efforts at Sloan Canyon. Come get sweaty with us and help conserve your public lands. See you there!

Presentation on Sloan Canyon NCA Northern Wilderness

Paul Renois, former Regional Coordinator of the Nevada Site Stewards program will be giving a presentation on the Sloan Canyon NCA Northern Wilderness. Take a walk into the Duck Creek watershed, an area off the beaten path in Sloan and not seen or visited by many. It is also an area of both pre-historic and historic significance with signs of human activity going back almost 9000 years. Learn about the efforts BLM and the State of Nevada are taking to protect and conserve the cultural and natural resources of the McCullough Wilderness area.

    Stewardship begins with the Community

The Bureau of Land Management may manage our public lands, but it's We The People that own it. It's up to us to do the housekeeping needed to keep it maintained and protected for future generations to enjoy and learn from. To that end we organize a growing number of stewardship work days each year with key partners such as the Bureau of Land Management and the City of Henderson. Our signature event each year is National Public Lands Day, and that day is almost here! We'll be organizing a group of 30 or so volunteers to install replacement and new trail signage along Sloan's 601 trail. Join us for a morning of some sweat, lots of fun with outdoors friends, and the satisfaction of contributing to the stewardship of our local public lands. We own them, it's up to us to do the housekeeping. We're starting at 7:30am Saturday, September 30th at the McCullough Hills Trailhead. Contact Ranger Gina at gmele@blm.gov or by phone at 702-515-5355 to register.
